What is Sustainable Tourism?

Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable tourism is a way of travel that meets tourists' needs as well as respects local environment, social culture and economic development. Its core objective is to enable both local communities and future generations to benefit from tourism without damaging Nature and cultural resources.

Based on the interpretation of UN Tourism,
sustainable tourism should

  • 1
Make the most use of the environment and resources that significantly shape the development of tourism to maintain the basic ecosystem as well as help protect natural heritage and biodiversity.
  • 2
Respect and accept the authenticity of social culture in the community, protect their tangible and intangible cultural heritage and traditional values, and promote cross-cultural understanding and tolerance.
  • 3
Ensure feasible long-term economic operation, fairly distribute social and economic benefits to all who share a common interest, including providing communities with sustainable employment opportunities, incomes and social services, and reduce poverty.

The development of sustainable tourism requires the awareness and participation of all who share a common interest and powerful political guidance to ensure extensive participation and consensuses. It is an ongoing process to realize sustainable tourism. Moreover, it requires constant monitoring, and the introduction of preventive and corrective measures when necessary.
