The Wufeng Lin family, listed as one of the five major families, is famous in Taiwan's history. They originated in Wufeng, Taichung (formerly known as Atabu). Their ancestors came from Pinghe County, Zhangzhou, Fujian, and crossed the sea to Taiwan as early as the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. By helping to quell the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, the Chao-chuen Tai incident, and the Sino-French War, they not only won the honor of "Junior Guardian of the Crown Prince" but also mastered the significant camphor monopoly and military power at the time, becoming one of the most influential gentry families in Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty.

The Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden has three parts: the "Lower Mansion," the "Upper Mansion," and the "Laiyuan." The representatives of the Lower Mansion, Wen-Cha Lin and Chao-Dong Lin, had outstanding military achievements. The Upper Mansion is well known for the contributions of Xian-Tang Lin to culture, education, and politics. Wen-Qin Lin of Upper Mansion built Laiyuan to serve his mother, and it is one of the representative gardens in Taiwan. The Wufeng Lin Family Gongbaodi Park is the only first-rank official residence that recreates historical scenes.
The " Wufeng Lin Family Gongbaodi Park" is the most representative building of the Lower Mansion and the only first-rank official residence of the Qing Dynasty preserved in Taiwan. It was first built by Wen-Cha Lin in 1858 and later expanded by Chao-Dong Lin. It has a grand layout of five courtyards and eleven-bay width of the house, which are vast, symmetrical, and majestic.
Besides the main building, "Gongbaodi," the garden also includes the "Great Flower Hall" for entertaining guests and watching plays, and the "Caocuo," restored to its appearance in the 1930s, symbolizing the place where the Lin family prospered. The most eye-catching thing about the Grand Flower Hall is the Fuzhou-style stage and the octagonal caisson ceiling. Exquisitely carved with peony patterns, the roof symbolizes wealth. In the past, this place was an entertainment space and a multifunctional "guest house" where the Lin family held family banquets, opera performances, and political meetings. When you come here, you may sign up to wear ancient costumes or print silk fans, or you can listen to a guided tour, enjoy refreshments, appreciate traditional music performances, and feel the cultural heritage of the aristocratic family in a quiet atmosphere.
Stroll through the Wufeng Lin Family Nourishment Orchard and experience the elegant daily life of the Lin family.
The Upper Mansion includes the Tower of Prospective Fragrance Building, the Hibiscus-Mirror Studio, the Nourishment Orchard, and the New House. The "Wufeng Lin Family Nourishment Orchard" was originally the accounting office and granary space of the Upper Mansion of the Lin family. 1906, Ji-Tang Lin converted it into a recreational garden, combining Japanese and Western styles.
The building is elegant, and the interior furnishings are ingenious, showing the Lin family's attention to aesthetic life. The garden displays precious furniture, artworks, and collections from past generations of the Lin family, and you can see the taste and ingenuity of life everywhere. The garden is full of chrysanthemums and orchids. Because of its elegant style, people have called it the "Little Summer Palace." It was also an important place where He-Nian Lin received officials and discussed government affairs when he was the mayor of Taichung County. It is a historical space that combines elegant architecture with political context. Strolling through it, you can appreciate the beauty of classical gardening and feel the traces of the Lin family's modern life and political and business style.
