The Deji Reservoir is in Taichung's upper reaches of the Dajia River. It is a high mountain reservoir and the first variable-radius thin arch dam made of concrete in Taiwan. It has the functions of water supply, flood control, irrigation, and hydroelectric power generation. The watershed spans Taichung City, Nantou County, and Yilan County and has long provided a reliable water source for the central region.
The name of Deji Reservoir is a symbol of hope for the country.
Deji Reservoir was originally named Dajian Reservoir. Construction began in late 1969 and was put into use in 1974. When it was completed, the late President Chiang Kai-shek renamed it "Deji Reservoir" based on the words of Zichan of Zheng State in the Spring and Autumn Period, "Virtue (De) is the foundation (Ji) of a country," to express his hope for the country.
The aesthetic of dam construction is a rare thin arch dam.
Compared with the heavy appearance of other reservoirs, Deji Reservoir uses mountain walls as a stable foundation, and the elegant and thin variable-radius shape, combined with the compressive strength of concrete, showcases the aesthetics of dam construction. The water in front of the dam forms a blue goose egg-shaped large lake, and the lake surface shines with the surrounding mountains. And the misty mountains and the beautiful autumn maple scenery create a stunning landscape painting.
