Shantangbei Hiking Trail is east of Sanwan Village, Sanwan Township, Miaoli County. It is a circular route consisting of Trails 1 to 4, totaling 4.4 kilometers. It takes about two hours to walk around the Dapitang Mountain Area. Along the way, you can see the ponds, bamboo forest, Taiwan acacia forest, and a century-old Tudigong temple. The scenery is quiet and pleasant, with a simple rural style.
Peaceful rural pond scenery
Shantangbei is the only hill in Sanwan Village. In the past, people dug ponds at the foot of the mountain to collect rainwater from the back of the hill and used nearby mountain ditches to divert water for irrigation to the villagers of Sanwan Village. Therefore, the locals called this pond "Shantang." Consequently, it is also known as "Shantangbei" relative to Sanwan Street.
The bamboo forest and Taiwan acacia forest on the side of the trail are private attractions for climbers.
The main line of the Shantangbei is the No. 3 and No. 4 hiking trails. The Taiwan acacia forest on the No. 3 trail is lush and green, and the No. 4 trail, paved with stone slabs, has a dense makino bamboo forest on the side of the trail. The entrance to the Shantangbei hiking trail is No. 1 and No. 2 industrial roads. The former is in the north of the route, and the latter is in the south of the route. The four trails connect in a loop. If you walk to the commanding heights along the road, you can overlook the peaks of Lion's Head Mountain and Mt. Wuzhi.
We recommend downloading an offline map before the trip to prevent getting lost. The route is generally flat, except for Trail 4, which is slightly undulating. You can choose the path according to your preference.
